Introduction

Article 99 of the Indian constitution reflects on the oath that an official has to take before commencing his service. It reflects so specifically for the House Of Parliament. 

Before diving deep into Article 99, let us first emphasize briefly the significance of oath and oath ceremony in the context of government. 

Significance Of Oath 

You must have been into an oath ceremony at least once or must have taken at least one in your life. But, why is an oath ceremony held? What is the significance of an oath ceremony? 

An oath is a verbal promise in the name of God or in the name of someone of the highest regard. It represents one’s willingness to serve the purpose by making a promise in advance. 

Now, that you know how significant an oath ceremony is, you now might be having some idea about how this plays a vital role too in our government. Every official who is going to serve in any of the prominent offices of the country has to undergo an oath ceremony irrespective of the hierarchy he is sharing. 

The Third Schedule of the Indian Constitution defines and surmounts all different kinds of oath forms for different offices in the government that are tailored according to the purpose.

What does Article 99 Of The Indian Constitution Say?

As in the constitution, the aforementioned article goes like “Every member of either House of Parliament shall, before taking his seat, make and subscribe before the President, or some person appointed on that behalf by him, an oath or affirmation according to the form set out for the purpose in the Third Schedule.” 

Article 99 of the Indian constitution simply says that each and every person who is about to commence his service either in the Lok Sabha or Rajya Sabha shall have to take an oath before the President of India. 

The oath has to be taken according to the form that has been defined in the Third Schedule of the Indian constitution.
